The client wanted a low cost, energy efficient house and a greenhouse.
The problem with this house was that the plot was situated at the epicentre of an earthquake area.
The Design question
How to create an energy efficient, low cost house that is also earthquake resistant?
The concept of this design was to create a light weight wooden construction with a open side at the south and a closed side at the north. This way the solar heat gain will be maximized. The south side partially exists of a greenhouse. The facade of the south side is polycarbonate, a cheap and insulating material that is frequently used for greenhouses. The integrated greenhouse creates a heat buffer that offers excellent insulation. The light weight wooden construction is not only cheap but also earthquake resistant due to its weight.
